Astley Castle

A contemporary house inserted into the twelfth-century ruins of Astley Castle in Warwickshire by Witherford Watson Mann has won the RIBA Stirling Prize 2013 for the greatest contribution to British architecture in the last year.
This is the first time London studio Witherford Watson Mann has been nominated for the prize, which is awarded annually by the RIBA to a building designed by a UK-registered architect. It is the first house and the first restoration project to win the award in its 18-year history. via dezeen

Provenance / Amie Siegel

Simon Preston Gallery is delighted to present a solo exhibition by Amie Siegel, her first at the gallery, from Sunday 8 September until Sunday 6 October, 2013. Known for an expansive body of work ranging from photographs, sound, video, installations and feature films, Siegel will premiere a multi-part project that tracks backwards the origins and economic movements of cultural objects. Characteristic of the artist's layered approach, the work self-reflexively takes on the behaviors of the system it describes. via lewoandwe

Casa Reais

The concept of first comprehending the existing house and then visualizing it as one in mind, the architects from Concheiro de Montard decided to make the most of the lighting possibilities of the ‘Casas Reais’, using the two existing natural light sources in the house.
On one side, the house extends to the gallery embracing the sunlight and the views of the old town. On the other side, the small existing windows are perceived as a whole, creating a space with pleasant and changing brightness throughout the day. Under this new concept, the house is conceived as a collection of spaces with specific character. The rooms become visible due to the articulations and expansions of the space through furniture design. The furniture harmonizes and allows to a continuous perception of the space. The existing stone wall, with its lime mortar texture, is shown to its fullest, connecting the living room – kitchen – master bed room in a sequence of spaces. The wooden gallery integrates visually with the interior space through the new carpentry work, which serves as a filter between the indoor and outdoor environments. via ignant

1972 by Noriaka Minami

In the city of Tokyo, a building stands as an anachronism in relation to the surrounding landscape. The building in question is the Nakagin Capsule Tower designed by Kisho Kurokawa (1934 – 2007), one of the leading members of an experimental architectural movement in the 1960s called Metabolism. This prototype for life in the 21st Century ultimately proved to be an exception rather than the rule, as the first capsule tower became the last completed in the world. Today, the building faces the threat of demolition to make way for a conventional apartment complex. This photographic series captures the building as it faces an uncertain fate.Noritaka Minami’s work ’1972′ is a ongoing project and a response to the building’s potential disappearance as a tangible piece of cultural memory in Tokyo. The camera engages this singular presence within a city and explores the implications this vision of the future from the past holds for contemporary society.

Villa Mairea 1938-1939 / Alvar Aalto

Villa Mairea is a villa, guest-house, and rural retreat designed and built by the Finnish modernist architect Alvar Aalto for Harry and Maire Gullichsen in Noormarkku, Finland.
The Gullichsens were a wealthy couple and members of the Ahlström family. They told Aalto that he should regard it as 'an experimental house'. Aalto seems to have treated the house as an opportunity to bring together all the themes that had been preoccupying him in his work to that point but had not been able to include them in actual buildings.
